Young singles 'increasingly opposed to cheating'

Posted on: August 13, 2013 11:46:54

Young singles By flicking through the pages of the latest gossip magazines or browsing the channels on TV for something to watch, many Britons may believe that the world is more sex-obsessed than ever before.

Even during a night on the town with friends, it seems around every corner there is a pair of strangers hooking up or making their way to a taxi before getting saucy between the sheets.

But it seems attitudes towards promiscuity are changing considerably - and perhaps surprisingly, young people are becoming less inclined to cheat on their partners than in previous years, with more of them now valuing commitment more than ever before.

A new study carried out by Laura Watt - a sociology researcher at the University of Manchester - revealed individuals aged between 18 and 30 value monogamy and fidelity within their romances, while those in this age group view being unfaithful as unacceptable.

Reported by the Independent, the research revealed that attitudes towards sex and relationships among young people have changed considerably from the 1990s - when people were more likely to stray from their partner.

Nowadays however, just one in ten Britons have stuck with a boyfriend or girlfriend who cheated on them, while eight in ten believe it is wrong for someone to have more than one lover when they are living with someone, representing a rise of four per cent over the last ten years.

In addition, nine out of ten respondents who took part in the poll said they think cheating on a spouse is unjustifiable under any circumstances.

Attitudes towards sexual activity when individuals are not romantically linked were found to have become considerably more open-minded, with people who believe casual sex is wrong falling from over 60 per cent to 37 per cent over ten years.
