Women 'want flings with funny men'Posted on: May 14, 2013 13:30:22
Men who pride themselves on being able to crack a joke in any situation may be on the right track for bagging themselves a new partner, but it seems women who like this type of guy are only after one thing.
Researchers from the University of Stirling have suggested the gift of wit is seen by ladies as a sign of flirting and appeals to those who are looking for a casual bit of fun between the sheets because it is not viewed as serious.
A study carried out into the matter by Mary Cowan and Anthony Little saw 40 students select two items they would take to a desert island and the reasons behind this choice - including chocolate, a plastic bag or hairspray.
And despite the fact the participants had not been told to make their responses humorous, 19 of the 40 tried to make people laugh with their answers.
For this reason, they were categorised as "actors" by the researchers and their explanations were then subject to deconstruction by the next students - who were asked to rate them for humour and attractiveness.
This group was then rated for whether they would be most suited to a short-term fling - including a one-night stand - or a long-term romance.
Findings from a follow-up study into a similar issue uncovered very similar responses - that perceived flirtation creates a desire for a fling.
Analysts revealed male wit was found to score more highly for casual romances because "it nurtures an impression of not being serious or willing to invest in a mate".
Similarly, men like the idea of going out on a date with a woman who is viewed as funny because they take the humorous comments as a sign that he may get lucky if he pulls out his best moves.
