Women 'steal style tips from their mum'

Posted on: June 20, 2013 11:00:51

Women They say women become more like their mothers as they age. But unfortunately for men, this could actually happen a lot sooner than they anticipated - with females stealing style tips from their parent from childhood.

This is according to a new study from Lancome, which found mothers are the major fashion and beauty influence for millions of ladies, who take on board up to two dozen hints, tips and habits over the years.

Researchers, who questioned 2,000 women, found the most common piece of advice daughters take from their mum is to blend in their make-up around their jawline.

On top of this, they also learnt that too much cleavage is a fashion no-no, while carrying a spare pair of tights with them could be useful in case of a ladder disaster while they are out and about.

These pearls of wisdom could be transferred into a woman's dating experiences, so men may have their future mother-in-laws to thank if they think their other half is looking particularly sexy on an evening out.

And it seems some image-conscious ladies are more likely to trust their mother's opinion than a style expert, with a third of those polled admitting they totally rely on their mum for advice.

Commenting on the findings, a Lancome spokeswoman said it is heartening that mothers and their daughters share a similar outlook in the style stakes.

The official added: "We inherit so much from our mothers they are always going to be the most trustworthy  person to turn to, and on the whole women tend to have a similar skin tone, body shape and colouring as their mother, so who better to speak to?

"Many women look to their mums as a gauge to see how they are going to age which is very interesting to us as our scientists have devoted years to the study of genes and their role in youth and beauty."
