Women 'remove engagement rings to fit in at work'Posted on: October 21, 2013 13:51:56
Getting engaged is one of the most exciting times in any woman's life, when she can prove her commitment to her partner by wearing a ring to symbolise their love.
But it seems some females feel the need to hide their relationship status on a professional level, for fear that wearing a sparkler could damage their employment prospects.
According to new research from comparejewellery.com, one in three married or engaged women in the UK admit to removing their ring in certain situations.
Researchers, who questioned 1,712 adults, found fear of harming progression in their professional lives was the number one reason ladies wanted to appear single.
When asked to elaborate on reasons they took off the trinket when it was not necessarily normal to do so, 35 per cent of respondents said they most commonly removed their ring while at work.
What's more, 29 per cent of women took this step when attending job interviews, while shockingly, 22 per cent of married or engaged women did so when out socialising with friends.
Of the study's participants who claimed to have removed their ring at work, some 62 per cent explained that they did so because they were afraid that the signal of their relationship status would affect their career prospects.
Worryingly, 59 per cent of respondents who claimed to remove their ring when out socialising said they did so because they wanted to appear single, while just eight per cent said they were worried they would lose their ring.
Of all respondents who claimed to remove their wedding or engagement ring, just nine per cent claimed their husband or partner was aware they had done so.
Ali O'Neill from comparejewellery.com said: "It's clear from our results that engagement and wedding rings signify so much more than simply a marriage - they're a signal of our life plan. Whether or not others take note of the rings, as many women believe, remains to be seen."
