Women are 'disregarding traditional dating rules'

Posted on: January 10, 2013 15:46:05

Women are Women are increasingly disregarding the traditional rules of dating by making the first move, according to a survey.

No longer are female UK singles resting on their laurels in the vain hope that someone will whisk them off the feet. Instead, they are living by the philosophy 'why wait?', the Daily Mail reports.

According to a poll carried out by, just 21 per cent of the fairer sex insist on waiting for a man to get in touch first, compared to 79 per cent of women who believe there is no point in hanging about if they find someone they are attracted to.

Furthermore, when it comes to seeking a new partner, the research found that social media has become an increasingly relied-upon platform for finding out more information about someone, with as many as 65 per cent of respondents in the survey admitting to 'Facebook stalking' before getting in contact.

In light of the latest findings, it seems that the new edition of The Rules, a dating book which advises against women ever making the first move, is being disregarded by the majority of singletons.

"The premise of The Rules is that, as unfeminist as it sounds, a woman should do absolutely nothing to start a relationship," an extract in the book explains.

It also recommends women avoid replying back instantly to any messages a potential date sends to them.

According to Ellen Fein and Sherrie Schneider, the authors of the book, females should leave it at least four hours before responding to a message from the opposite sex.

Women over the age of 30 should wait as long as 12 hours and mature singles over the age of 40 should resist replying for 24 hours.

This is the second edition of the dating 'bible' for women after the worldwide success of the first copy in the mid-1990s.

Sarah Beeny, TV personality and founder of the website who conducted the poll, said: "People have been dating from the Dark Ages to the digital age, but the host of technologies available today has massively changed the game, causing a load of new fascinating dating behaviours."
