Whatever happened to the chivalrous man?

Posted on: September 18, 2013 16:34:26

Whatever happened to the chivalrous man? Many women spend their lives dreaming of meeting a man who will sweep them off their feet, acting as a knight in shining armor to save them from the horrors of awkward first dates and the advances of undesirable suitors.

But while you fantasise about a guy who always picks up the bill, opens doors for you and protects you from harm - is this nothing more than a distant wish? Do chivalrous men still exist, or have independent women made guys shy away from the hero role?

If the findings from a new study are to be believed, it seems some men are a lot more cowardly than they would like to admit. Research carried out by home security specialist Yale revealed one in five men would happily send their other half to investigate a strange noise in the middle of the night.

Analysts, who questioned 2,000 adults, found that most blokes would rather stay in bed than check the house is not being burgled. In fact, around a quarter of guys pretend to be asleep upon hearing a bump in the night in a bid to avoid having to venture downstairs.

The study also revealed that one in ten men are too scared to get out of bed to investigate unusual noises, preferring to let their other half get up instead.

However, it seems the reality is much less worrying than originally thought. With the sounds usually the neighbours arguing, talking too loudly, playing music or disciplining their noisy pets.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson from Yale said: "While the study indicates that women are generally more fearful and worried about strange noises heard in the middle of the night, there is a large percentage of men who feel the same and will do anything to avoid leaving the safety of their bedroom.

”In the majority of cases, noises in the small hours are caused by the weather, pets or the neighbours, but in the middle of the night it is easy to let our imaginations run wild."
