Want more intimacy? Go long-distancePosted on: July 22, 2013 16:49:28
Those looking for something deep and meaningful with a new partner might want to set their sights further afield.
A new study suggests that people in long-distance relationships are more intimate than couples who live together. Professionals asked 63 couples - half of whom cohabited - to keep a one week diary, detailing the time they spent with their partners.
The research from the City University of Hong Kong and Cornell University found that those who lived further apart spoke fewer times during the way, which might not be shocking news. But it might come as a surprise that these couples had more meaningful interactions.
Those living in 'geographically impossible' places were more likely to share their personal thoughts and feelings, and tended to be more romantically satisfied than those living closer together.
Professor L. Jiang revealed: "The long-distance couples try harder than geographically close couples in communicating affection and intimacy."
Without the routine daily hassles of dirty socks on the floor and whose turn it is to wash the cat, couples can be more focused on each other and get on with their daily lives separately. Spending time with your partner around the clock can be a drain on your energy - sometimes you just want to sit back and relax, which might make closer relationships more difficult.
The professor suggested that the positive effects of long-distance relationships had something to do with idealising partners while they are away. Those who saw their partners more regularly, or every day, tended to look at their other half more realistically without the fuzzy glow that absence sometimes brings.
Over 75 per cent of university students said they had had a long-distance relationship at some point. As electronic communication gets better every day, couples in far flung places can use texting, Skype and instant messaging to stay in touch. Long-distance relationships are becoming easier every day.
