Treat 'em mean policy 'does not work'Posted on: October 11, 2013 15:50:12
The old saying "treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen" is one that many singles live by, leaving a potential partner wanting more by creating an air of mystery and coming across as unavailable.
But how effective is adopting a stand-offish persona with that special someone? According to new research, doing so may not be the best way to find yourself a significant other.
A study from dating website eHarmony has found just one in 14 singles obey the three-day rule before making contact with a date.
Researchers, who questioned 1,000 singles about their dating habits, found only four per cent of respondents thought they should wait before replying to a message from a new partner.
Commenting on the findings, which were published in the Daily Mail, relationship expert Jenni Trent Hughes said: "Acting aloof by not responding to a message until a few days after a date doesn’t work in today’s age of instant communication.
"This technique worked best in the movies, but was always seriously flawed in real life. People respond best to positive actions. Smiles and appreciation of who they are and what they have to offer is the best way to go."
Another dating habit many singles usually carry out is looking at their partner's Facebook page before going out on a real-life date with them. However, experts suggested that this may not be a good idea.
Stalking your potential Mr or Mrs Right's social media profiles is likely to result in a perceived notion of a person, which often turns out to be false.
Dr Hughes added that being positive is the key to enjoying a successful first date.
He added: "People typically respond best to positive and open actions so closed behaviour is now only good for one thing - closing the door on a potentially successful relationship."
