Tom Daley says it was ''love at first sight''Posted on: December 5, 2013 17:21:13
When people first meet a new partner, it can be difficult to tell your friends and family, especially if you are coming out as gay. However, earlier this week Olympic diver Tom Daley revealed that he had a boyfriend.
Now, the 19-year-old sportsman has spoken for the first time about his nerve-wracking decision to tell the world, as well as how he felt when he first met his other half.
It appears that he needn't have worried about the reception he would receive as he was met by deafening cheers and a standing ovation when he walked onto set to film this week's The Jonathan Ross Show.
The young diver turned to his YouTube channel to reveal that he was seeing a man, though he added that he still fancies women.
Referring to his relationship with boyfriend 39-year-old Dustin Lance Black, Tom said that it was "love at first sight".
"I’ve never felt anything like it – and I made the first move,” he told Jonathan Ross.
He told the chat show host: “It felt like it was my dirty little secret, like I had chains round me and I couldn’t say anything and I couldn’t be who I wanted to be. I felt so alone and trapped in who I was.”
It has been revealed that the first person he told was childhood friend Sophie Lee and he said that telling someone took "such a weight off" his shoulders.
Family and friends were told at his birthday party is May and the Olympic diver says that everyone has been supportive of his announcement.
He said: “They are all so supportive of me... but to have all the support from the public as well has just been a bonus and, honestly, it makes me smile just thinking about it.”
Tom didn't reveal the name of his boyfriend on the ITV chat show but it has been widely reported that it is the Oscar-winning screenwriter and LGBT campaigner.
The young sportsman said that he was surprised how quickly he fell for his partner when they met at the Kids' Choice Awards in March earlier this year.
He said: “I didn’t expect it and it happened. Everything kinda clicked, everything went right. He really does make me feel safe and happy.
“I was falling for a guy and it happened so quickly. I mean, I thought I had really liked someone before but I had never felt the feeling of love.”
If you are looking for a new partner, online dating can give you a safe environment to meet new people of either sex.
