Think before you speak on a first datePosted on: December 14, 2012 15:20:31
For UK singles who are re-entering the dating market after a number of years, it can be difficult to know the protocol when it comes to meeting someone for the first time.
Going out on a date is a time to enjoy yourself, socialise and meet new people, but it is likely to not go to plan if a few simple pieces of advice aren't followed.
First of all, keep an eye on how much you drink when going out. While a glass or two can help you relax, a swaying, mumbling and red-toothed blind date is unlikely to win over too many hearts this Christmas.
A pub or restaurant is a great place to arrange to meet up. However, nerves and a large glass of chardonnay don't always go well together and can end up with you giving off the wrong impression.
We all know an overly-emotional drunk, the drunk that loves everyone and of course the one who loves to dance, but perhaps saving it until later on in the relationship is a good idea.
If things are going well, it can be hard to resist the temptation of asking personal questions about your date's life. Finding out whether or not they are ready for kids or marriage and how much they earn within moments of a first date might not go down too well though.
Discovering whether you both envisage a similar future is vital for any partnership to work in the long-run, but posing the questions too early could put others off due to the fear that things are moving too fast.
Steering clear of any mention of exes is always a good idea too. Reminiscing about the good times or comparing your date to your last partner rarely goes down well. It is only natural if someone was a big part of your life - especially if you both have children - to refer to them, but do try to avoid gushing anecdotes or bitter and angry remarks about them.
Lastly, have a good old think before you say something you might regret when it comes to how you feel. Dismissing them straight away - or going to another extreme and declaring your love within hours - could be something you later live to regret.
