There is a science behind playing hard to getPosted on: December 11, 2012 17:25:42
The saying 'treat them mean, keep them keen' can either result in a budding new relationship or end up as a frustrating method of dating for both males and females.
However, there could actually be some scientific evidence to explain just why so many people adopt this method when it comes to looking for love.
According to new research, both sexes are as bad as each other blowing hot and cold, and it is used as a way of manipulating a partner to find out how much they are loved.
The University of Western Sydney and Singapore Management University tested as many as 58 different types of strategies, ranging from flirting with others to diverting a love interest's phone call on to voicemail.
The researchers found there could be some evolutionary factors as to why people choose to play hard to get, with women in particular being prone to testing their "prospective mate's commitment" and "[manipulating] their prospective mates to obtain what - or whom - they want," the Independent quoted the psychologists, who carried out the study, as saying.
"We revealed that the more unavailable a person is, the more people are willing to invest in them. It seems as though your grandmother's advice might be true - absence may indeed make the heart grow fonder," they added.
The most feminine methods to lure men included being highly self-confident, withholding sex, being sarcastic and turning down the first few dates.
That could be explained as a way of trying to find out more information about a potential mate for when they might have a child with them, the researchers explained, or simply because men avoid using such tactics as often for fear they will miss out on getting a bit of action.
So, if any of those excuses or traits are surprisingly similar to what you are experiencing in your quest for love, then hang on in there. Your date could just be testing you to see whether or not you are perfect boyfriend of girlfriend material.
