Taste success on your first date with special cutleryPosted on: October 1, 2013 16:55:52
For those people brave enough to invite the object of their desires around to theirs to cook a good old-fashioned homemade meal for the first date, be wary - it's a veritable minefield.
Not only is there the potential trap of letting the food burn, or your date not liking your cooking - there's also the added risks of them finding something embarrassing or overly revealing about you just casually lying around the home.
However, Spanish designer Cristina Guardiola thinks she may have come up with the answer to at least one of the hoops to jump through - first date cutlery.
Cristina says on her webpage: "The collection explores the interaction between objects, people and table manners in a dinner context, particularly in a face-to-face first date scenario. Bon appetite!"
The specially shaped knives, forks and spoons provide an interesting talking point in themselves, however, their main purpose is to force you into proper table etiquette and engage in conversation while eating.
For example, the soup spoon is designed to ensure that you make an ideal first impression with your starter - its shape encouraging you to sip your concoction from the right side, making sure you don't look like a slob when you inadvertently spill or slurp.
The knife and fork for the main course have been sculpted to help stimulate conversation between the two of you. Special in-built magnets allow the two instruments in your hands to cross, encouraging short breaks in the meal so you can chat without interrupting each others eating.
Finally, the dessert spoon seems to be designed for the more up-front first-daters among us. This isn't shaped like your usual dessert spoon - according to Cristina it is "characterised by an oval bowl, which was turned 180 degrees". Hard to explain without a picture, but basically it makes sharing one dish very easily and also encourages feeding each other, should things take a turn for the good.
