Strategies for happy and long-lasting relationships revealedPosted on: February 4, 2013 16:46:55
UK singles looking for love should aim to take into consideration five key things to secure a successful relationship next time round, new findings have suggested.
According to scientists in the US, the "maintenance strategies" can be used to preserve or improve the quality of a partnership.
Openness, positivity, assurances, sharing tasks and a shared social network can all improve a relationship, the University of Illinois study revealed.
Brian Ogolsky, a professor of human and community development at the institute, compared love lives to cars, claiming that you have to "do certain things to keep them running, especially when your goal is to strengthen and preserve your bond with your partner".
Analysing data from 35 studies, as well as over 12,000 individual reports, the researchers said opening up to your loved ones, discussing not only your feelings but theirs as well, was vital.
"It's also important to assure your partner that you're in the relationship for the long haul, to divide household chores and responsibilities equally, and to make an effort to include your partner's friends and family in some of your activities," Mr Ogolsky, added.
Bearing in mind these five areas within a relationship will not only allow you to be more satisfied and committed, but also will make you more likely to continue to love and like each other, he said.
With such busy lifestyles, individuals can become complacent and could be at risk of taking their loved one for granted after dating for a while, the report suggested.
So, when you find the one, make sure no matter how hectic your life is or how long you have been together, small attempts at keeping the flame alive by maintaining strong communication are made.
In another study, conducted in Spain, it was suggested that sticking to traditional stereotypes could also help improve a relationship.
Couples where men were more likely to do the chores around the house were found to have less success in the bedroom, whereas blokes who carried out more masculine tasks - such as DIY - reported higher sexual frequency.
