Stick to old-fashioned gender stereotypes for improved love lifePosted on: January 30, 2013 13:00:05
Couples who stick to traditional gender roles are more likely to have a better love life, it has been claimed.
According to research carried out in Spain, couples who carry out jobs around the house that are more stereotypically related to a male or female make love as many as 20 times more a year than those who don't.
Partnerships where men are more likely to do the household chores were actually found to have less success in the bedroom, despite previous reports suggesting that men who did help out around the house had a better chance of getting lucky.
"Couples in which men participate more in housework typically done by women report having sex less frequently," lead author of the study Dr Sabino Kornrich, from the Juan March Institute in Madrid, said.
"Similarly, couples in which men participate more in traditionally masculine tasks - such as DIY and car maintenance - report higher sexual frequency."
The researchers spoke to 4,500 couples in the US, with respondents averaging over the age of 40.
In the findings, which were published in the American Sociological Review, it was suggested that the adoption of traditional gender roles was important when it came to sexual desire.
"Our definition of attractiveness is linked to the ideal of masculinity and femininity. These ideals are not necessarily the most modern and this may be a hangover of that," Dr Kornrich added.
However, any smug men out there who think they are armed with the perfect excuse to get out of vacuuming and dusting might want to bear the last bit of information from the report in mind first.
Indeed, men who refuse to help out at all around the house run the risk of causing conflict in the relationship and reducing their partner's satisfaction, it claimed.
Last month, a study suggested that women are losing interest in meterosexual men and are instead refocusing their attention back to more masculine members of the opposite sex.
