Some adults 'making do' in relationships

Posted on: August 21, 2013 13:47:07

Some adults Finding the love of your life is something that most people spend years dreaming of, so much so that they can very often overestimate how difficult and challenging some relationships can be.

But after realising that real-life romance may not actually be all roses and public displays of affection, would you be willing to settle down with someone who you weren't sure was actually 'the one'?

According to a new study, one in seven adults is currently in a long-term relationship with someone they do not class as the love of their life. Depressingly, 73 per cent of people have "made do" with their partner because their "true love" slipped through their fingers.

The poll - carried out by Siemens Festival Nights - found that a quarter of all adults have been in love with two people at the same time - and 17 per cent said they have met their ideal partner since getting together with their current other half.

Shockingly, 46 per cent of the 2,000 respondents said they would be prepared to leave their current spouse or partner to be with their one true love.

However, researchers found that despite common stereotypes, men are more loyal to their partners than women - with 37 per cent admitting they would stay in the relationship for the sake of their companion.

The study revealed that the average person has fallen head over heels in love just twice in their life, while they have been left heartbroken on a single occasion.

Commenting on the findings, Claire Jarvis - director of communications for Siemens - said: "The results showed it can be hard to find ‘the one’ and although the general perception is that women tend to fall in love more often than men, it was intriguing to see that in reality both men and women fall in love on average two times in their life.

”What is alarming is that so many people claim to be in long term relationships or even married to someone who isn’t the true love of their life."
