Singletons are 'attracted to people who look like them'Posted on: January 22, 2013 14:46:01
It is often said that owners pick pets that bear a resemblance to themselves, but can the same really be said when it comes to choosing a new partner?
If a recent dating expert from the US is to be believed, it looks like the trend does actually extend to lovers too.
According to Christina Bloom, founder and chief executive officer of findyourfacemate website, individuals are more attracted to people who have a similar facial structure to theirs.
Although the thought of going out with the male or female version of yourself no doubt makes you feel a little bit uncomfortable, is there actually any truth in the statement?
Of course, a person's appearance is often one of the most important things people consider when looking for love, but most people would agree they don't set out to look for someone who is the spitting image of what they see when looking in the mirror.
"It's not that we are looking for ourselves," Ms Bloom suggests, "It's when we meet someone we recognise something that attracts us, and I think it's facial similarities".
"You see someone and you decide within the first few minutes whether you're interested in them or not. Right away, you can see it in a photo or you can see it when you meet the person, you can see style," she added.
Surprisingly, it isn't the first time that a study similar to this has found that opposites might not actually attract.
According to the University of Liverpool, who carried out a study looking at the link between appearance and personality, the longer the amount of time you spend with someone in a relationship, the more similarities in appearance grow.
So, next time you are flicking through potential dates on an online dating website, why not pay a little bit of extra attention to the kind of people you are initially drawn to.
While it is unlikely you are going to stumble across someone who is the spitting image of you - not that you would want to - you might be surprised to find you have more in common than simply sharing the same hobbies and interests.
