Sexting 'does count as cheating'Posted on: July 9, 2013 14:30:20
Being single in the 21st century is certainly an exciting experience, as tech-savvy individuals have been given the chance to get to know like-minded people with a single tap of their smartphone or a click of the mouse.
And while online dating, social media and other innovative methods have opened doors for less confident members of the public, the secretive nature of the web has made life increasingly difficult for those who are in a relationship.
Nowadays, cheating on your partner is not as simple as walking into a nightclub and kissing the first guy or girl you see, there are other more secretive ways to engage in an illicit romance without fear of ever being caught out.
An increasing number of people are reporting finding details of a sordid affair on their partner's smartphone, as text messages are also a popular way of communicating with individuals you probably should not be.
However, a new study has revealed both men and women believe that sexting is just as harmful to a relationship as cheating.
As part of a YouGov poll of 1,000 adults in the US, which was commissioned by the Huffington Post, 85 per cent of females said they believe the act of sending flirty messages via mobile phone is dishonest, despite the fact no physical contact is involved.
With 74 per cent of men citing the same answer, it would seem members of both sexes are in agreeance that the act should be avoided by people in relationships.
Both genders also agreed that sending a Facebook message to a former partner and forming a close bond with someone through texting or emails were also just as bad as the physical act of cheating.
Interestingly, researchers found significant differences in responses depending on the age of participants, with older people a lot less tolerant of their partner's use of social media websites including Facebook and Twitter.
