Restaurants 'worst place for first date'Posted on: May 28, 2013 12:21:08
Heading out on the town with a new partner can be an exciting and daunting time for singles, with many struggling to drum up inspiration on the ideal locations for a first date that will leave your prospective lover wanting more.
Usually, those people who are preparing to woo a potential new boyfriend or girlfriend will revert back to the usual favourite places when considering ideas on where to meet - including restaurants, pubs, clubs or coffee shops.
However, one body language expert has claimed that fancy dining establishments are among the worst locations for a first date as they do not allow much room for expressive movement.
Blake Eastman, founder of research and teaching organisation the Nonverbal Group, told StyleCaster that being restricted to behind a table during an initial meeting can hold some people back in the long term.
In order to prevent this, the expert - who claims "movement is a great predictor of first date success" - suggested starting a night out in a bar, before moving on to a restaurant and ending with an activity where you are able to stretch your limbs is ideal.
Mr Eastman said: "Dates are all about having fun and having a good time, so you'll tend to see that in good dates, people will move around a lot."
According to the expert, a successful initial meeting between a pair of singles involves a location that encourages small actions like moving back and forth, hand gestures and animation - which could keep your companion entertained throughout the evening.
Bowling is a great activity to try out on a first date, as it allows you release your inhibitions and have fun with that special someone in an environment where you are forced to let your guard down and be yourself.
In addition, ensuring you create an environment where your partner is comfortable - by maintaining natural eye contact and not being too intimidating - is a must, as it shows you are trustworthy.
