Research reveals why men cheat more

Research reveals why men cheat moreIts not men's fault that they tend to cheat more than women in a relationship, apparently.

Before you start shouting at the computer screen - its not women's fault, either.

According to new research in the US, infidelity all boils down to science - in particular the fact that men experience strong sexual impulses, and not because the have poor self-control.

Natasha Tidwell, a doctoral student in the Department of Psychology at Texas A&M University, said: "Overall, these studies suggest that men are more likely to give in to sexual temptations because they tend to have stronger sexual impulse strength than women do."

Researchers first spoke to over 200 people - two-thirds of them female - to test the hypothesis.

They answered questions designed to measure their strength of sexual impulse, attempts to intentionally control the sexual impulse and resulting behaviours.

From this, the scientists reported men had experienced stronger impulses and were more likely to act on them.

Next, 600 people - this time the majority being male - were asked to take part in a series of quick-fire questions to determine how strong their self-control and sexual impulses were.

The exercise uncovered that men performed much worse than their female counterparts.

However, recent research carried out in the UK was reported in the Independent as suggesting that despite men apparently not being able to help themselves - both sexes now view infidelity as "unacceptable".

The study found that people aged between 18 and 30 value monogamy more than ever - with just one in ten of us supportive of partners who cheat.

Despite that though, the same survey found that the proportion of those who feel casual sex is wrong has fallen from over 60 per cent to 37 per cent in the last decade.
