Pheromone parties: The next dating craze?

Posted on: April 8, 2013 15:24:40

Pheromone parties: The next dating craze?A unique new way for UK singles to find romance could soon be sweeping the country.

Already popular in the US, this social event, known as a 'pheromone party' aims to find that special someone through the natural odours that we give off.

Before the event, singletons are given a plain white T-shirt and are advised to sleep in it for three consecutive nights. They are also urged not to wear deodorant to allow their 'natural smell' to shine through.

The item of clothing is then collected and put into individual bags for other participants to sniff. If they like what they smell, they are then introduced to the owner.

Popularity for these gatherings has arisen across the pond thanks to previous findings which suggest that, like other animals, we are subliminally drawn to these pheromones through our skin, which are given out by people we are most compatible with.

Avoiding eating any pongy food beforehand is always recommended before a first date, but perhaps considering what you eat before going to a party of this kind is even more important than ever.

The founder of the concept said a recent Los Angeles party proved it was an effective way of meeting a new partner.

According to Judith Prays, half a dozen couples met up with one another again, and one pair even formed a lasting relationship as a result, the MailOnline reports.

Last year, a study was carried out to try and find out the top smells women found most arousing.

Fresh coffee emerged as one of the most alluring odours, Mindlab International Laboratory found, with aftershave, fresh linen and a natural 'no scent' also popular.

Dr David Lewis, chartered psychologist and founder and director of research at the laboratory, said that smell has a huge impact on our perceptions of people.

"What is interesting is the findings show it can influence our visual senses - making the same man seem more or less attractive or intelligent depending on what women are smelling when they see him," he added.
