Signing up to an online dating site is good value for money, those looking for love have been told.

Canada.com has pointed out that spending money on a monthly subscription that can connect you to dozens of potential partners is better than wasting twice as much on a single date that does not lead anywhere.

Online dating is relatively inexpensive, the news provider explained, but the cheapest is not necessarily the best.

"Investigate sites before signing up and handing over your credit-card information," the website advised.

Check the refund and payment policy so you know when payment will be taken and options for cancelling, it continued.

New online dating users should also consider the pros and cons of free sites or those that allow paying and non-paying members, as there may be restrictions on making contact.

Once signed up, be sure to carefully consider the picture used on the profile page, Your Tango writer Stephanie Castillo has advised.

She suggested taking shots from a variety of angles to choose the one that best highlights good features.
