Not enough sleep makes you unattractive

Posted on: November 12, 2013 16:18:31

Not enough sleep makes you unattractiveMany may think that 'beauty sleep' is just an out-dated phrase but a new study has indicated that getting enough sleep does make you more attractive.

A team of researchers at Stockholm's Karolinska Institute studied ten people and found that a good night's sleep helps make a person look more attractive.

After studying ten people, researchers at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute found that an adequate night’s sleep helps make a person look more attractive. Then a group of 40 observers recorded how their appearance had changed over the time they had been deprived of sleep by looking at photos before and after.

Participants that didn't get enough sleep had drooping eyes and aggravated faces, reports the Daily Mail. According to the study, each person was kept awake for 31 hours and kept under observation to see how their appearance changed over time.

The results found that all the subjects had developed swollen eyelids, bloodshot eyes, and dark under-eye circles after going without sleep for just 31 hours.

Published in the medical journal Sleep, one of the researchers wrote: "We confirmed that sleep deprived people are perceived as more fatigued, less attractive, sadder, and less healthy than when they are rested."

Participants in the study also had more facial wrinkles. Tina Sundelin, research team leader, puts this down to the fact that when you are sleeping the amount of blood flowing to your skin increases "dramatically" and so sleep loss can affect the skin's condition.

Unsurprisingly, the lack of sleep also had an effect on how the participants felt with the observers noting that they had droopy frowns, which was interpreted as a sign of sadness and mental fatigue.

Ms Sundelin says that "sleep loss is indeed related to a negative mood" and added that people become more emotional if they don't get enough sleep.

Feeling good looking is important for making you feel confident as well as attracting the other sex when you are dating. However, if you are struggling with finding people you are interested in you could find your love online.ADNFCR-2828-ID-801659793-ADNFCR
