Men 'value looks more than anything else'Posted on: August 28, 2013 11:35:48
The stereotype that men value having a glamorous woman on their arm more than anything else has been challenged frequently in recent years, with studies claiming males are much less shallow than traditional opinion may think.
Nowadays, the belief is that more sensitive guys are looking for the same thing as their female counterpart - a trusting relationship where both parties want the same things from life.
However, new research has suggested that traditional opinion may actually not be too far from the truth, as guys actually value their partner's looks more than anything else.
Findings published in this month's Journal of Personality and Social Psychology suggested there are stark differences between the ways in which members of both genders choose mates in real-life contexts.
Scientists investigated using both men and women with low social status, along with people who were deemed to have low physical attractiveness. They discovered that after chatting with the opposite sex, men - more than women - rejected and reported less attraction toward potential mates who were not as good looking.
However, women were not completely innocent. Findings revealed that ladies are more likely to fancy a guy who is of higher social status.
Professor Norman Li, associate professor of psychology at Singapore Management University and lead author of the study, said the research is novel because scientists are clarifying how exactly men and women differ.
He explained: "That is, they prioritise different qualities when screening each other in online chats and speed-dates - women want men who are at least average in social status while men want women who are at least moderately physically attractive."
The expert went on to suggest that men and women differ mostly on the low-end qualities that they want to avoid, rather than the high-end traits that they ideally look for in a partner.
