Men spend more time and money preparing for a date

Posted on: March 19, 2013 16:53:02

Men spend more time and money preparing for a dateIf UK singles had to guess who spent the most time and money getting ready for a date, most would probably assume it was safe to say it would be the fairer sex - but you'd be wrong.

According to new research, men spend on average £46.79 pampering and preening before the big day, with women spending around a fiver less.

It seems that male singletons on the look out for love no longer believe a quick check for bad breath, an extra spritz of aftershave and - if you're lucky - a shower and clean underpants, is enough.

Indeed, MSN, who conducted the study, found that men were most likely to trim their facial hair and tidy their rooms before having sex with a new partner.

That wasn't all, though, with gents going as far as buying new underwear and even bed linen in a bid to impress.

However, also appearing in the top ten was something slightly less romantic - with some men indulging in a back wax before getting intimate with a date.

Dr Pam Spurr, a relationship expert at, said men are increasingly feeling the pressure to impress their dates.

"It might seem surprising in times of recession that the average Brit bloke spends nearly £50 simply getting ready for a hot date, with women not too far behind," she said. "But there is enormous competition out there and so psychologically it makes a singleton feel ready to put their best foot forward."

The survey revealed that men feel more confident baring all when splashing the cash, while around a quarter admitted they do it because they feel pressurised by society to be groomed before being intimate with a new romance.

Before taking the plunge with a new bloke, women were most likely to indulge in a wax, linen and new lingerie.

Despite this, a recent poll suggested that moving things a step forward in a relationship isn't always as exciting as it seems.

Thomas O'Connell from the online pharmacy website, described most Brits' love life as 'vanilla'.

"When it boils down to it, we just [want] regular sex sessions where we feel comfortable," he said.
