Men 'more likely to lie' on online dating websites

Men are more likely to lie about how rich they are and any previous relationships they have had when using an online dating website.

This is according to research conducted by Jeffrey Hall, a communication studies professor from Kansas, who assessed more than 5,000 participants.

He also discovered that men are more likely to tell a few fibs about their age, personal interests and the type of relationship they are after.

However, it is women who often turn out to be a different weight to the one they list on their online dating profile.

Mr Hall said that "if you're an extrovert, you might downplay the number of past relationships you've had because chances are you've had more relationships than an introvert".

He said that often, people bend the truth when they use the internet because they merely want to be liked.
