Men 'are happier in retirement than women'

Posted on: May 21, 2013 12:18:36

Men British men are more likely to be happy in retirement than their female counterparts because they enjoy getting into new hobbies and interests, a new survey has revealed.

Research commissioned by Skipton Building Society found blokes become increasingly content after giving up work and look forward to spending time relaxing at home, whereas women prefer to keep busy.

Analysts noted that members of the fairer sex are more likely to feel lonely in retirement than men, with many wishing they lived closer to relatives and friends who they could visit on a regular basis.

In addition, it was revealed ladies are also more likely to spend their later life worrying about their lack of income, while also feeling frustrated that they have to watch every penny they spend.

Worryingly, eight-in-ten females admitted they feel as if they have no purpose left in life when they give up work.

Women believe that a happy retirement depends on how good their social life is, with 56 per cent of females making the effort to meet up with friends compared to just 33 per cent of men.

Those older individuals who are hooked up to the internet could find they meet other like-minded people by trying out senior dating.

Online dating is a great way for older singles to meet people when they have given up work and could be considered by those who are wondering how best to spend all their newfound spare time.

Commenting on the study's findings, Stacey Stothard - corporate communications manager at Skipton Building Society - said: "After spending between twenty and forty years in employment, it can be a shock to the system to find you have 24 hours a day, seven days a week to yourself.

"And this new found freedom gives women plenty of time to think about money worries, boredom and ill health."ADNFCR-2828-ID-801588279-ADNFCR
