Love at first smellPosted on: December 20, 2012 13:33:52
Some romantics believe there is such thing as love at first sight, but perhaps the saying should be love at first sniff instead, after a recent survey found that women are more turned on by certain smells.
In a study to find out what smells women find arousing, fresh coffee emerged as one of the odours most alluring to the opposite sex.
The research, which was carried out at Mindlab International laboratory, required women to look at different pictures of men while smelling a range of aromas, Female First reports.
Measuring their levels of arousal while they did so, the findings revealed that levels of attractiveness were found to be higher when they could smell aftershave, while the smell of fresh coffee was the second most popular choice.
Dr David Lewis, chartered psychologist and founder and director of research at the laboratory, said that smell has a huge impact on our perceptions of people and can not only bring back memories, but can also have an influence on our everyday life.
"What is interesting is the findings show it can influence our visual senses - making the same man seem more or less attractive or intelligent depending on what women are smelling when they see him," he added.
Overall, 28 per cent of single females found men more attractive when smelling coffee, compared to no smell at all.
Also appearing in the list of top smells that could help you to find yourself a special someone was a whiff of fresh linen and a natural 'no scent'.
Women were also asked to rate the perceived levels on intelligence and fun of the men in the photographs.
Mark Swift, director of marketing at De'Longhi, who the research was for, said no longer is a girl simply won over by the car you drive or the clothes you wear.
"To get the woman of their dreams, guys need to make sure every little detail is just right - with smell being high up the list of priorities," he said.
So, if you haven't had much luck getting yourself a date, it might be worth asking Santa for a new bottle of fragrance, or failing that, perhaps spend more of your spare time at the local coffee shop to find yourself a new partner.
