Lack of sleep 'causes couples to row'Posted on: July 10, 2013 15:16:06
The stresses and strains of daily life can very often put even the strongest relationships under pressure, as both men and women tend to take their frustrations out on their partner.
But it seems the usual worries - such as money and work - are not the only factors that could contribute to arguments, with a lack of sleep also a major decider in how couples treat each other on a daily basis.
A study published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science revealed boyfriends and girlfriends are more likely to lash out at each other if they suffer a bad night's sleep.
Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, found sleepy couples display increased irritability and mood swings, as well as a heightened chance of putting on weight and becoming depressed.
Not only that, those who are suffering from a bad quality of slumber at night tend to have lower libidos than their well-rested counterparts - something that could put even more pressure on stressed men and women.
As part of the study, researchers collected data on the sleep habits of more than 100 duos who had been together for an average of two years. Participants were asked to provide details of their quality of rest and relationship stresses over a two-week period.
Findings revealed that respondents reported more arguments with their other half on the day after they suffered a bad night's sleep.
In a separate experiment, couples were videotaped speaking about subjects that caused the most arguments. It was revealed that participants and their partners reported more negative feelings if they were tired.
Commenting on the findings, study co-leader Serena Chen said: "For the first time, to our knowledge, we can see the process of how the nature, degree and resolution of conflict are negatively impacted by poor sleep.
"Even among relatively good sleepers, a poor night of sleep was associated with more conflict with their romantic partner the next day."
