Is sleeping with your ex ever a good idea?

Posted on: August 6, 2013 10:48:04

Is sleeping with your ex ever a good idea? They say your ex is your ex for a reason - but how would you feel if you knew spending one last night of passion with your significant other could mean you successfully got over them for good?

According to a group of researchers, this may be the case. Scientists from the University of Arizona have claimed that climbing between the sheets with a former partner could actually lessen the psychological distress caused by a break-up.

The findings, which were published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, suggested partners who could not accept the fact they were no longer in a relationship with that person were helped through the pain by one more saucy encounter.

Questioning a group of 137 recently divorced adults, researchers found that most participants remained in contact with their ex after parting ways, while 21.9 per cent had engaged in sexual activity despite no longer being an item.

However, new singles take note: it seems those people who feel like they are 'over' their relationship should avoid making love with their ex at all costs - as this could actually bring back unwanted romantic feelings.

Partners who had accepted the break-up found sex made no difference at all to how they dealt with the split, which suggests sleeping with their former flame may not be as emotionally harmful as previously thought.

Speaking to the Daily Mail about the findings, relationship expert Tracey Cox said some women in particular could benefit from a short fling with their ex-boyfriend or husband because it can provide closure at the end of a romance.

She said: "Sometimes we need to go back to move forward - and revisiting the sexual side of the relationship can sometimes make us see very clearly that we've idealised the relationship or feel much less pain than we thought. So there's a sense of closure that can be helpful."
