Husky voices are 'most sexy'

Posted on: April 26, 2013 16:37:58

Husky voices are Male UK singles are most attractive if they have husky voices, a new study has revealed.

According to the findings, the perfect balance is a bloke who is large enough to be attractive, but not aggressive.

The research by scientists at UCL, which involved playing men and women taped voices from the opposite sex, also found that women with high-pitched but 'breathy' qualities were found to be the most attractive.

"What we found is that for males listening to females, they preferred the voice to be high-pitched - although not too high - and as breathy as possible," Dr Yi Lu told the Times newspaper.

"These suggest a small body size. Marilyn Monroe would be a very good female example."

Meanwhile, women would shy away from a male who sounds too aggressive.

"The pitch indicates masculinity. However, breathiness, which is not associated with being large, moderates the aggressiveness," Lu added.

Previous studies in the past have suggested that people are already aware that wooing a member of the opposite sex can be achieved by lowering their voices.

In 2010, a study in Pennsylvania said both males and females lower the pitch of their voice when they want to signal that they are attracted to another person.

This evidence dispels the myth that woman put on a more feminine tone – like the damsel in distress stereotype - when they find a man they are attracted to.

Researchers claimed this is technique is particularly popular when talking over the phone as a form of flirting to replace the visual fluttering of eyelashes or seductive smile.

Earlier this week, a study looking into the most seductive accent found that men were most likely to be attracted to a woman with a 'posh' Oxford accent.

Other sexy accents included Scottish, Welsh, Liverpudlian and Irish.

Rosie Freeman-Jones, a spokeswoman for, who carried out the survey, said: "Sometimes it's not just what you say but how you say it."
