How to banish first date nervesPosted on: April 10, 2013 16:32:42
For any UK singles crippled by nerves before meeting a date, you are far from being alone.
In fact, almost a third of people have admitted they get nervous before meeting someone for the first time.
As many as eight per cent of men surveyed in a recent Halls menthol sweet study revealed they got their date's name wrong because nerves got the better of them, while another two per cent confessed they even tripped up as a result of first date jitters.
Of the 2,150 Brits questioned, 14 per cent of blokes and 16 per cent of women said they have experienced a date where they have been lost for words, which resulted in an awkward atmosphere.
So, what can nervy singletons do to have a more relaxed date?
Now isn't the time to be experimenting with new fashion statements or haircuts. Pick out an outfit that you are completely relaxed in to put you and your date at ease when meeting for the first time.
While coming prepared with a full list of chat-up lines isn't recommended, thinking of a couple of ice breakers to get conversation rolling during the first few minutes will help to relax you both.
Keep it short and sweet
If you're concerned about what you're going to talk about, then keep it short and sweet. The first meeting is an opportunity to work out whether or not there is any spark there, so allocating no longer than an hour to meet up for a coffee is a great way to avoid any stresses over small talk.
Distract yourself beforehand
Dwelling on the 'what ifs' is only likely to get you worked up, so keep busy in the run-up to the date. Respondents in the Halls study found that having a few drinks for Dutch courage, going to the gym before meeting up or lining their stomach with a good meal can all help.
Take deep breaths
Susan Quilliam, Halls XS relationship expert said the last ten seconds before the first encounter is the most nerve-wracking time. "It's at this moment you need to take a deep breath and pull yourself together physically, mentally - and emotionally," she said.
