How getting married can save your lifePosted on: September 27, 2013 09:20:08
Can marriage be a potential lifesaver?
According to a new study in the US, yes - it can.
Researchers in Boston looked into whether there was a link between cancer survival rates and whether the patient was married - and it turned out that people who had tied the knot were found to have a 20 per cent better chance of surviving the disease.
That wasn't the only surprise, either. Scientists also said that having a spouse also brought greater benefits than undergoing chemotherapy in half the cancers studied.
Lead researcher Paul Nguyen said: "If you have a friend or a loved one or someone you care about with cancer, you can potentially make a big difference in their outcome by going with them to their doctor’s visit and helping them understand their diagnosis."
Apparently having a watchful husband or wife made it easier to catch the disease early - thus improving the patient's survival rate.
While women are often stereotyped for becoming a "nag" once they become a wife, this could actually help to improve men's survival rates too - with males involved in the research seeing a 23 per cent higher chance of beating cancer if they were married, compared with 16 per cent of women.
Researchers believe this could actually be down to men being more likely to be pushed into going to the doctors earlier by their better halves.
The study involved over 730,000 people in the UK who were diagnosed with one of ten different types of cancer between 2004 and 2008.
Those with neck and head cancer saw the biggest benefit to their survival rates in the group from tying the knot compared to people with other forms of the disease.
If you're on the lookout for love - give online dating a try.
