Food etiquette on a first datePosted on: April 17, 2013 16:41:30
Everyone is likely to have experienced a first date from hell at some point in their life.
Whether it is because conversation has dried up after five minutes, or the person you are sat in front of is everything you had hoped they weren't, it is inevitable that most UK singles will experience a bad date.
One of the beauties of online dating is that you can limit the chances of this happening, by finding out more about the kind of person you are meeting beforehand.
Taking a look at their pictures, reading their profile and then creating a bond by talking over email or on the phone - hopefully - means that when it comes to meeting face to face, things will go without a hitch.
However, there are also a number of things you might want to bear in mind before embarking on your first date to make sure you're not the reason for turning things sour.
According to a recent survey by YO! Sushi, one of the biggest things that could influence how a date goes is manners.
Both men and women said they are important, with over half admitting they wouldn't want to go on a second date if their potential new partner displayed bad manners, Female First reports.
Topping the list of no-nos was individuals who check their phone for Facebook and Twitter notifications while eating.
Other turn-offs in the survey include people who get drunk during the date, singletons who choose food for their suitor, and those who order the most expensive dish on the menu but don't eat it.
As many as 20 per cent of Brits claim they watch how much they eat, in case their date is judging them, with a third of women choosing to eat less so their date doesn't think they are greedy.
However, for men, the biggest grievances when it comes to eating out on a first date are down to money, as respondents admitted they worry about the state of their wallet when dates choose pricey meals but fail to eat them.
