Five ways to guarantee a happy relationship

Posted on: April 9, 2013 15:36:46

Five ways to guarantee a happy relationshipUK singles who are hoping to have more luck in a new relationship might want to take on board these five tips.

Share your thoughts

According to a study by Terri Orbuch, a psychologist and author, half of couples in a happy relationship claim they share intimate details about their lives.

She recommends that couples - no matter how long you have been together - talk for at least ten minutes to one another every day. However, instead of the mundane details about your day, family or work, she suggests delving a little bit deeper, such as asking what you would do if you won the lottery or what your ideal career would be if you could start over.

Walk in their shoes

Agreeing to disagree on certain subject matters in a relationship can be difficult to achieve at first. To be able to progress and embark on a long-term partnership sometimes requires taking a step back and seeing things from someone else's perspective. Next time you are wound up about something your new partner has done, or you can't get a sense of what they are feeling, put yourself in their shoes and see whether things are any clearer.

Focus on the little things

While grand gestures can be one way of winning over your sweetheart, sometimes it is the smaller things that matter the most. Splashing the cash might be impressive at first, but if it lacks thought or imagination, then it could go unnoticed or unappreciated. Thoughtful notes, compliments or even a helping hand with the housework could be just as effective when it comes to impressing.

Remain independent

During the honeymoon period it can be tempting to shun everyone else in society and dedicate all of your time to your loved one. However, it is important to remain independent, no matter how inseparable you may become. Dedicate time to your friends and family, and allocate some alone time as well for a healthier and happy relationship.

Accept life isn't a film

Lastly, remember that unlike montages from a rom-com, not everything is going to be hunky-dory. Even the strongest relationship will have its up and downs, so try to have realistic expectations during the more difficult times and work together to overcome any issues that may arise.
