First date texting etiquettePosted on: December 10, 2012 10:28:46
Last week, the most popular method of communicating turned the ripe old age of 20. The text message has revolutionised the way we communicate, it has kept millions of people in contact with loved ones and for some - notably footballers - it has resulted in breakups and fallouts with their other half.
For UK singles, texting can be a great way to get to know more about someone after arranging a date on an online dating website. However, before you do so, it might be worth bearing in mind some do's and don'ts when it comes to texting etiquette.
A good place to start before sending a message to your date is to check what you have actually typed when using predictive text. A slip of the finger or an unnoticed change of word because of auto-correct can land you in hot water and could result in some very confused and mixed messages.
Secondly, remember that tone and timing can be lost in a message if you are trying to be funny or sarcastic, so sometimes it might be easier just to pick up the phone. It is always a good idea to speak properly before you arrange a date anyway, because you can get a much clearer idea of what a person is like, and more importantly, can help to gain an insight into whether or not the date is likely to go well.
Of course there will be nerves on a first date, but if you are struggling to spark any sort of conversation from the off, then that could be a sign that things might not go so smoothly on the big day.
After the date, it can be difficult to get the timing right for texting. If things went well, why bother playing mind games to see who will text first? Just go for it. Take some time to consider your wording before sending a message though, perhaps just letting them know how much you enjoyed the night and checking that they got home safely.
Lastly, if you are thinking of texting something you wouldn't feel comfortable saying to them in person, avoid using it in a message.
