Facebook 'can damage relationships'Posted on: June 7, 2013 14:41:16
But browsing Facebook on a regular basis when you are in a relationship can actually damage your romance, new research has suggested.
A group of scientists from the US said people who utilise the website excessively are at risk of experiencing Facebook-related conflict with their partner, which is then likely to result in negative outcomes such as cheating, break-up or divorce.
Researcher Russell Clayton, a doctoral student in the University of Missouri School of Journalism, asked participants to describe how often they used social media and whether it caused arguments with their current or former partner.
Findings revealed that high levels of Facebook use among couples often resulted in negative outcomes - which could make many people think twice before logging on via their laptop, smartphone or media tablet.
What's more, those who have recently got involved with a new partner could have additional reasons to avoid Facebook, as analysts noted the findings were particularly apparent to couples who have not been together for long.
Clayton said: "This suggests that Facebook may be a threat to relationships that are not fully matured. On the other hand, participants who have been in relationships for longer than three years may not use Facebook as often, or may have more matured relationships, and therefore Facebook use may not be a threat or concern."
The findings could provide a wake-up call for men and women who spend hours with their eyes glued to their mobile phones each day. It may be time to lock the gadget away in a drawer and spend some quality time with your lover with no unwanted distractions.
