Dieting with pals will keep you thin

Posted on: December 5, 2013 16:20:23

Dieting with pals will keep you thinMany people that are trying to meet a new partner will try to slim down, especially after the Christmas period where a lot of us pile on a few extra pounds. Getting to a healthy weight can make you feel more confident and happier to get back into the dating game.

A survey has found that those who diet alone only stand a one in five chance of staying slim for more than a month, while people who diet with a pal had a one in three chance of keeping the weight off for the same period.

Nearly three-quarters (71 per cent) admitted that they would be more likely to lose weight if they were doing it with a friend, reports the Mail Online.

The survey, which included 2,000 female dieters, found that people lose more pounds by slimming with a friend when compared to going it alone. There was a 15 per cent increase in the number of people that had lost more than 10 pounds when dieting with a pal, compared to those who had tried to slim down alone.

Nearly 70 per cent of women that had dieted with friends and alone said that a healthy eating plan was easier to maintain when they had someone to talk to about it. The most important areas that dieters wanted to discuss were; how they're feeling, how to increase exercise, meal planning, how to avoid temptation and what they'll do when they lose the weight.

However, there was also an element of competition and jealousy involved as 40 per cent admitted that they felt envious about their friend's weight loss. Some 64 per cent said that this had spurred them on to lose their own excess weight.

Nearly two-thirds (60 per cent) said a pal's weight loss was inspiring because it made them realise that it was acheievable, while nearly half said it was because they were worried about being the fat friend.

Speaking for Weight Watchers, who conducted the research, Angharad Massie said: "This demonstrates the power of group support where you can talk about experiences and share ideas to stay motivated."ADNFCR-2828-ID-801669313-ADNFCR
