Could your smartphone be affecting your romance?

Posted on: August 30, 2013 12:14:59

Could your smartphone be affecting your romance? It would not be unfair to say that technology has revolutionised the way people operate, from forming relationships, to breaking up, from working to pleasure - our gadgets are the go-to device to get in touch with another person.

But how would you feel if you discovered that using your smartphone too much could actually be affecting your existing relationships? New research appears to suggest that this is the case.

Filmmaker Charlene deGuzman has claimed that pleasurable experiences are very often disrupted by mobile phone use. In her new short movie - entitled I Forgot My Phone - the director is shown doing activities including like hiking at sunrise, celebrating a birthday and lying in bed with a romantic partner.

Writing on her Tumblr account, Ms deGuzman said society's obsession with using mobile phones makes her "sad", while claiming "I'm constantly working on living in the moment, enjoying and taking it all in (without Instagramming it)".

She went on to say that she was inspired to make the video after going to a concert where everyone in the audience spent the whole time taking photos and videos on their smartphones, rather than enjoying the real-life experience.

And this is not the first time technology has been blamed for standing in the way of forming relationships. Although smartphones and tablets have done wonders for the way prospective partners can meet, some people's excessive use has put pressure on their existing relationships.

Research carried out earlier this year found that more than half of couples in the modern day and age never spoke to each other on the phone before they became an item, opting rather to communicate via social media and text message instead.

The findings, which were collated by Mobile Phone Checker, revealed that the way romantic partners choose to communicate has progressed considerably in recent years.
