Could losing weight affect your relationship?Posted on: November 7, 2013 10:53:02
Feeling good about the way you look is important for everyone, especially those who are hoping to find a special new partner.
This is just one of the reasons that losing weight is essential for some people, as their improved body confidence may drive them to find Mr or Miss Right.
However, the findings of a new study have suggested that shedding those extra pounds may not be as good for our relationships as we think. Researchers from the University of Texas and North Carolina State University found that a lack of intimacy and feelings of resentment in existing romances may be caused when one party loses weight.
According to the conclusions, when one person loses a significant number of pounds, their partner may begin to feel resentment and resist the healthy lifestyle changes.
Commenting on the findings, Lynsey Romo - co-author of the study - said: "I think when people lose weight, they usually expect their relationships to get better. The fact that in some cases there are these negative repercussions was surprising."
As part of the study researchers questioned 21 couples from various parts of the US, where one partner had lost at least 30 pounds in weight over the last two years. Each member of the pair then described the effects of these changes on their relationship.
It was found that when both partners welcomed the healthy new lifestyle, couples reported increased intimacy and better communication. However, on the other hand, when only one partner focused on lifestyle improvements, the results led to unwanted strain.
Pressure to change their appearance often meant the individual who had not shed extra pounds would feel insecure and less interest in sex, as they were threatened by their other half's newfound confidence.
However, those taking the new and exciting journey together actually found their relationship improved in the long term.
