Christian singles are 'anxious' to find the onePosted on: April 22, 2013 16:28:19
Stumbling across the person of your dreams is never easy, particularly when it comes to finding the one who also shares the same values and religious views.
According to the 2001 UK census, as many as 37.3 million people in England and Wales stated their religion as being Christian, with certain areas such as Durham, Cumbria and Merseyside indicating higher populations of individuals sharing the belief.
In a recent study to identify the experiences of Christian singles, the decline in younger people attending church was found to have been a major factor in the struggle to find other singletons.
Indeed, many of the women interviewed in the Christian Connection research claimed there was strong competition to find a match in the church due to the limited number of people on the market.
One respondent in the study described women "buzzing" around eligible men "like bees around a honey pot", with another claiming an unattached guy is likely to be "pounced on", Christian Today reports.
Despite the challenges finding fellow Christian singles can present, more than half of respondents said they will never marry a non-Christian, while just under a third would only consider it if their spouse was sympathetic to their faith.
The research also suggested churches viewed as more traditional tend to be the place where more men can be found, whereas lively and family-focused places of worship appear to have more of a female presence.
Finding the one can take time, something which some people in the survey were becoming increasingly anxious about, as pressure to marry mounts.
Over two-thirds said being married was the "expected and accepted lifestyle in the church".
"The problem of meeting is exacerbated by the lack of a Christian dating culture once out of student days," Christian Connection statistician David Pullinger said. "Partly this is [down to] lack of support from churches, who say they want their members to be married but, according to people answering this survey, they are unsure about dating and don't encourage or support it."
"With so few single people evident in churches, you need a process for reaching other single Christians," he added.
One avenue which can be explored is a Christian online dating website, something which 80 per cent of people in the survey admitted they have tried.
