Chest hair: shave it off or leave it be?

Posted on: June 26, 2013 11:02:19

Chest hair: shave it off or leave it be?In recent years, men of all ages have fought become increasingly aware of the need to look good in order to get ahead in the dating game.

Gone are the times of rugged and unkempt males who are advocates of the 'just got out of bed' look, in favour of a more toned and clean-cut bloke, who spends hours in the gym and even longer preening himself for a night on the town.

While this metrosexuality is now widely accepted by members of both genders, there is one issue that divides singles and those in relationships greatly, with many believing it is a step too far: would you mind if your man shaved his chest hair?

From David Beckham to Daniel Craig, as well as other football players, singers and actors, it seems an increasing number of men are opting to shave or wax their bodies in order to achieve the sought-after bald look.

However, an article published in the Daily Mail revealed some males are willing to go to great lengths to emulate the look of their favourite celebrities - and one psychologist said it shows just how far they are pressured into looking good.

Clinical psychologist Linda Blair told the news provider: "Everywhere you look, the message is that good guys are hairless. In sport, the winners are the super-smooth men; in adverts for grooming products, the underlying message is that chest hair is undesirable.

"Today's men are bombarded with subliminal messages that they need a smooth chest to be attractive."

Similar to their female counterparts, it seems men are feeling the pressure to keep up with the latest celebrity trends and copy the appearance of their favourite stars - and are willing to go a long way to please their romantic interests.

However, the common consensus among women interviews by the Daily Mail was that the act of shaving your chest is "pure vanity". So maybe men should think again before they reach for that razor.
