Can pessimism make a relationship happier?Posted on: July 11, 2013 16:29:47
Remaining optimistic about the way your life is going can often be difficult, but the trait is one that is commonly associated with living a healthy and happy life.
However, if new research is to be believed, possessing a positive sentiment could actually work to the detriment of those people who are in a relationship - and adopting a more negative outlook could mean they are better prepared for trials and tribulations.
A study carried out by scientists Lisa Neff and Andrew Geers, which was published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found that people in relationships should pay more attention to the way their optimistic expectations are conceptualised.
Reported by the Daily Mail, the research said individuals who are generally more positive about their relationship may develop worse coping mechanisms when things get tough.
However, analysts also noted that those who focus their optimism solely on their romantic life are usually not as good at constructive problem-solving when they experience arguments with their other half.
These people also experienced serious declines in marital wellbeing over time.
For this reason, people who are romantically involved may want to ensure they maintain a degree of control over their emotions when meeting someone new and exciting. Even though it is fun to get lost in your feelings, keeping a sensible head at the same time cannot hurt.
Although the research suggests that being more pessimistic about the future is a desirable attribute, finding a happy balance between optimism and keeping a level-headed attitude is recommended for all singles.
Spending your time concentrating on the harsh realities of everyday life can make you feel rather down, especially if you have been looking for a special new partner for some time. Therefore, you should always ensure your happiness and wellbeing are at the forefront of your mind.
