Can a long-distance relationship work?

Posted on: January 31, 2013 15:52:26

Can a long-distance relationship work? One of the advantages of online dating is that you have the opportunity to meet people you wouldn't otherwise encounter on a day-to-day basis.

However, despite it never being easier to keep in touch with people, embarking on a long-distance relationship in the 21st century still does present some challenges.

Only as recently as this week, One Direction star Liam Payne reportedly spoke out about the strains of going out with someone who lives away.

According to reports in the Daily Star, his busy celebrity lifestyle has put a strain on his relationship, and the globe trotting pop star is said to be feeling the pressures of being away from girlfriend Danielle Peazer for long periods of time.

Speaking to the newspaper, the source said that Liam has turned to Harry Styles for advice, after admitting it was hard being apart from his partner.

"Harry told Liam to be more romantic and bombard Danielle with flowers," the insider claimed.

However, as well as "bombarding" your loved one with flowers, there are a number of other ways to cope with a long-distance relationship.

For some, spending time apart can work, but it isn't for everyone. There has to be plenty of trust for it to be able to work and it requires putting in some effort for it to be a success.

Keeping in regular contact is crucial, but it doesn't necessarily mean you have to be on the phone for hours at a time. Thanks to social media and the likes of Skype, keeping in touch has never been easier.

Although sending text messages and emails are a great way of touching base, getting to see each other via a webcam or chatting on the phone can develop a relationship further.

Try to focus on the positives and the opportunities you do have together, rather than wallowing in the time spent alone. Having a date of when you're next due to meet in mind can help to avoid causing tension during your precious time together.

When things do become more serious, you might need to consider what the next step is going to be. While for some people the distance thing won't be an issue, for others it isn't an option to live apart from a loved one indefinitely.
