Britons 'refuse to talk about intimate health issues'

Posted on: May 20, 2013 15:56:12

Britons Tight-lipped Britons are so shy about discussing intimate health problems that they often refuse to talk about them with their other half, new research has revealed.

A study commissioned by online doctor service Pharmacy2U showed 65 per cent of adults would be willing to suffer in silence so they could avoid the embarrassment of a face-to-face conversation about a problem with their private parts.

Worryingly, almost four-in-ten said they would not discuss the issue with their own partner.

As an alternative, some people are resorting to checking their symptoms on the internet via online advice forums in a bid to avoid talking to parents, close friends or even medical professionals.

Some 41 per cent of respondents said they have self-diagnosed their ailments on the web, with one-in-five confessing to buying drugs online so they did not have to show their face in a pharmacy.

Researchers discovered that shy individuals in particular, do not want to discuss their intimate problems with other people, 22 per cent worry that the friend they have told may spill the beans to someone else.

However, a failure to talk about health problems with other individuals runs the risk of making issues get worse - and more difficult to treat - over time.

More than one-in-ten respondents said they had caused their symptoms to last longer thanks to avoiding the doctors for a prolonged period and attempting to treat it themselves.

Dr Nitin Shori, medical director of Pharmacy2U, said: "Sadly, this research confirms that our famous British reserve is holding us back when it comes to seeking help for intimate health problems.

"And it’s worrying to see that so many people can't even bear to share their concerns with their own partner.

"Sometimes, just talking to your other half can really help ease the burden, and then give you the confidence you need to approach a doctor to get the problem sorted."
