Be playful to attract a partner, says studyPosted on: August 8, 2012 10:17:16
UK singles on the lookout for a long-term partner should get in touch with their playful side, a new study has indicated.
Researchers at Penn State University in the US suggested that playfulness could function as a signal of positive behaviour, rendering people who demonstrate this characteristic more attractive to potential mates.
"Playfulness in a male may signal to females that he is non-aggressive and less likely to harm them or their offspring," explained the university's Professor Garry Chick.
He added that women may use being playful in their encounters with men as a sign of their "youth and fertility".
The academics took an existing study that included a list of 13 traits that people might seek in prospective partners. They then added three new characteristics: 'playful', 'sense of humour' and 'fun-loving'.
Of the 16 items, 'sense of humour', 'fun-loving' and 'playful' ranked second, third and fourth respectively among traits that females would seek in males.
In a 2009 survey by Askmen.com, a sense of humour was rated the second most important trait that makes a woman 'relationship material'. The most important characteristic was a sense of loyalty.
