Are romantic phonecalls a thing of the past?

Posted on: August 1, 2013 11:33:16

Are romantic phonecalls a thing of the past? The common stereotype of a blossoming romance would usually include images of a pair of lovesick individuals talking for hours on the phone, while taking part in that oh-so familiar exchange over who should hang up first.

But it seems times have changed - and what many singles would consider an integral part of how their current romance developed, is now a thing of the past.

New research has revealed that more than half of couples in this day and age never spoke to each other on the phone before they became an item, opting to communicate via social media and text message instead.

A survey carried out by Mobile Phone Checker, which was reported by Female First, revealed 22 per cent of Britons choose not to talk on the phone at all and would only pick up their handset to speak to their partner in an emergency.

But what is the reason for this sudden change in attitude? Experts have claimed it is simply a progression in the way individuals communicate in the technology era.

With couples in years gone by sending love letters via post, the natural progression to text, email and Facebook is simply due to the increasing take-up of technology. However, we can't help but think that romance is becoming less important.

Of those respondents who claimed to never speak to their partner on the phone, 17 per cent said they had no need to do so, while 11 per cent claimed they were too busy to make time to dial their other half's number.

Commenting on the findings, Adam Cable - director of Mobile Phone Checker - said: "The results from the study highlight that nowadays, instead of one long phone call to catch up with each other’s day in the evening, it is now much more common for couples to rely on texts and social media continually throughout the day to keep in touch."
