Are relationships making you pile on the pounds?

Posted on: March 11, 2013 13:32:31

Are relationships making you pile on the pounds?Finding love can turn your whole life around, but it can also be the reason why you're finding it a struggle to fit into your favourite pair of jeans, research suggests.

According to experts, couples are more likely to put on weight once they are in a steady relationship, compared to singletons still trying to find the one.

The study, carried out at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, revealed that individuals who are happy with their partner tend to pile on the pounds more than those who aren't.

Andrea Meltzer, an assistant professor of psychology, believes the theory supports the notion that women who are in love stop taking care of themselves to look after their other half.

Couples who are content with their life and partner might be "relieved that the hunt for a mate is over", Ms Meltzer suggests and so is are more likely to slack off, something she refers to as the "mating market" model, which suggests keeping an eye on your weight is mostly motivated by attracting a new partner.

Although not everyone is likely to agree with the US findings, some experts in the field in the UK can see some truth in the research, the Sunday People reports.

Helen Bond, a dietitian believes that eating habits can in fact be influenced by emotions - such as love.

"It's easy to become relaxed, where trips to the gym can easily be swapped for takeaways on the sofa and indulgent meals out," she said.

Dominic Knight, NLP therapist, also agrees that an expanding waistline could have something to do with romance.

"If you're over eating because you think, 'well I've got him now I'll eat what I like,' it may be counterproductive, but if you're eating a little bit extra out of happiness and living life to the full that's OK," he claims.
